Frequently Asked Questions
What is DegreePro?
DegreePro is an electric coffee maker designed specifically for South Indian-style filter coffee (also known as Degree Coffee). It automates the traditional brewing process while preserving the authentic taste and aroma.
How does DegreePro Work?
DegreePro is built using our patent pending technology to carefully curate water temperature, flow and brew time. This ensures a perfect decoction extraction, without the need for any supervision. DegreePro maximizes flavour extraction giving you the strongest decoction for a given amount of coffee powder.
Compared to instant coffee or instant decoction, not only do you save money when using DegreePro, you also get a better tasting filter coffee.
What makes DegreePro different from a regular coffee maker?
Unlike Western-style drip coffee makers or espresso machines, DegreePro is designed for South Indian filter coffee. It replicates the slow percolation process required for strong and flavorful decoction. Other coffee machines don't brew authentic South Indian style filter coffee. Customers usually compromise with other coffee makers such as using too much coffee powder, or adding more decoction and less milk. No such compromise is needed with DegreePro.
How does one use DegreePro?
- Fill water to shown level in the appliance.
- Add ground coffee to the filter compartment up to the marked level and attach to the appliance..
- Attach the collection compartment beneath the filter compartment.
- Start the brewing process using the touch buttons and the screen.
Can I use instant coffee powder in DegreePro?
No, DegreePro is designed for freshly ground filter coffee powder. It requires traditional South Indian filter coffee powder, typically a blend of coffee and chicory.
What type of coffee powder should I use?
Use South Indian filter coffee powder, typically a blend of coffee and chicory. Brands like Narasus, Cothas, Leo, or freshly ground coffee from a local roastery work best. We recommend a 80:20 to 90:10 ratio of coffee and chicory but ultimately its your choice.
For optimum results, use a medium coarse grind (like Sooji/Rava).
How long does DegreePro take to brew coffee?
DegreePro takes about 10-15 minutes to extract a rich decoction, similar to the traditional process. A slow brew is essential for authentic South Indian style brewing. See the next FAQ
Can I set DegreePro to brew coffee in advance?
Yes! DegreePro comes with a built-in timer, allowing you to schedule your decoction preparation so it's ready when you need it. For example, you could set it to have hot decoction ready when you wake up everyday.
How much decoction does DegreePro make in one cycle?
With 30 grams of coffee grounds, DegreePro uses 180 ml of water. The resulting decoction is sufficient for at least 6 large cups of strong filter coffee.
